Welcome to The Tax Institute’s first dedicated estate administration symposium for tax advisers. This practical two-day event will give you essential tools to employ when clients lose capacity or pass away.

With an ageing population and increasing wealth held personally and via superannuation funds and trusts, clients expect the modern tax and accounting practice to be across practical matters in the event of their incapacity or death. This is your opportunity to learn what you need to provide to the ATO and how, what new registrations are required, useful checklists and timelines, and to hear from senior ATO officers about your obligations and how administration processes might be streamlined.

You will also be informed about other practical issues such as what to do when clients suffer an event, how to deal with family members and beneficiaries, liaising with other advisers and what to do if you are named as an attorney or executor.

All of this will be combined with cutting-edge technical sessions on topics such as dealing with death benefits under superannuation, complex CGT rules for estates and the challenges of business succession.

In addition to question time at the end of each session, there is a dedicated workshop for you to raise and discuss issues arising from your experiences in administration of your clients’ affairs.

This is a unique opportunity to hear from some of Australia’s best estate and tax advisers and to help ensure your practice is prepared for the great transition in wealth over the next 20 years. Sessions and speakers include:

  • - Keynote address: Why is this so important? - John de Groot (de Groots Wills and Estate Lawyers)
  • - The Process of administration – The taxing process for when you are notified that your client has passed away - Nathan Lindemann (ATO) and Linda Farmer, CTA (Grant Thornton)

  • - Revisiting the income tax and capital gains tax consequences - Melanie Costin (Vincents)
